If you have family or friends living abroad, Viber is worth knowing about. Calls between Viber users anywhere in the world are completely free over Wi-Fi — including video calls, voice calls, and messages. It is less well known in the UK than WhatsApp but works in exactly the same way.
What is Viber?
Viber is a free messaging and calling app that works on both iPhone and Android. It is particularly popular in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia — making it a great choice if your family connections span multiple countries. Like WhatsApp, it uses your mobile number to sign up and works over Wi-Fi.
What We Like
Completely free international calls Calls between Viber users are free no matter where in the world they are. This makes it ideal for staying in touch with family overseas without any phone charges.
Works on iPhone and Android Like WhatsApp, Viber works on any smartphone — so it doesn't matter whether you or your family use iPhones or Android phones.
Works just like WhatsApp If you already know how to use WhatsApp, Viber will feel immediately familiar. The layout and features are very similar.
Group calls and chats Viber supports group video calls and group chats — perfect for family groups spread across different countries.
Low-cost calls to non-Viber numbers Similar to Skype, Viber also allows calls to regular phone numbers at low cost — useful if not everyone has the app.
What We Don't Like
Less widely used in the UK Viber is less popular in the UK than WhatsApp. You may find that UK-based family members prefer to stick with WhatsApp rather than downloading something new.
Best suited to international use Viber's main advantage — free international calls — is less relevant if most of your family live nearby. WhatsApp would be a better everyday choice for UK-based calls.
