Three Quiet Little Upgrades That Make Phone Calls Less Annoying

Not every update needs to be about safety
Most of our tech guides lately have been about scams and staying safe online, and rightly so — but not every update from Apple or Google is about a threat to watch out for. Some are just genuinely nice quality-of-life improvements, and this batch, part of the iOS 26 update, is a good example. None of what follows needs any technical know-how beyond tapping a couple of settings.
1. Hold Assist — never listen to hold music again
This is the standout feature, and the good news is it works on any iPhone that can run iOS 26 — not just the newest models.
Make your call as normal
If you're placed on hold, a message will appear after 10-15 seconds asking "Hold this Call?"
Tap Hold, then leave the Phone app and get on with something else
Your iPhone listens for the hold music to stop. The moment a real person answers, you'll get a notification — tap it to jump straight back into the call
There's nothing to switch on beforehand; it offers itself automatically the next time you're put on hold. Worth knowing: it listens for hold music specifically, so it can occasionally struggle with automated voice messages rather than music — if that happens, you can always return to the call yourself.
2. Call Screening — let your phone ask who's calling
This one helps with the other end of the phone problem: calls from numbers you don't recognise.
Go to Settings > Apps > Phone
Look for "Screen Unknown Callers"
If you see it, choose "Ask Reason for Calling"
Once turned on, when someone not in your contacts calls, your iPhone will ask them to say their name and reason for calling before your phone even rings properly. You'll see their answer written on your screen and can decide whether it's worth picking up.
A note of honesty: reports on exactly which iPhones and languages support this feature have been inconsistent, and it may not appear for everyone yet. If you don't see the setting in your Phone app, that's not something you've done wrong — it simply may not have reached your device or region yet.
3. A calmer Messages inbox
Alongside calls, texts have had a tidy-up too. Messages from numbers that aren't saved in your contacts — including things like delivery codes and one-off verification texts — are now automatically sorted into a separate "Unknown Senders" section, rather than sitting mixed in with messages from people you know.
You'll find this by opening the Messages app and looking near the top for the new folder. There's nothing to set up; it happens automatically once you've updated.
Checking you're up to date
All three of these need iOS 26. To check: Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is available, it's worth doing when you have a bit of time and are near your charger.
Small things, worth having
None of these features will change your life, but they'll each save you a little bit of daily irritation — and that adds up. Give Hold Assist a try next time you're stuck waiting for the GP surgery to answer; it's the easiest of the three to appreciate straight away.
