Our Verdict

If you have an iPhone or iPad, FaceTime is the simplest and most reliable way to make free video calls. It is already built into your device — no downloading, no signing up, no setup. Just tap a name and call. For Apple users it simply doesn't get easier than this.

What is FaceTime?

FaceTime is Apple's own video calling app. It comes pre-installed on every iPhone, iPad, and Mac computer. Because Apple makes both the app and the devices it runs on, FaceTime is incredibly reliable and produces excellent picture and sound quality.

What We Like

Nothing to download or set up FaceTime is already on your iPhone or iPad. You don't need to download anything, create an account, or remember a password. Just open the app and call.

Brilliant picture and sound quality FaceTime is known for having some of the best video and audio quality of any calling app. Calls are smooth, clear, and rarely drop.

Calls from your contacts list You can start a FaceTime call directly from your Contacts app or Phone app — just find the person's name, scroll down and tap FaceTime. No need to open a separate app at all.

Audio only option Rather not use the camera? FaceTime also works as a voice call over Wi-Fi — similar to a normal phone call but completely free.

Group calls FaceTime supports group calls with up to 32 people — one of the largest group call limits of any free app.

What We Don't Like

Apple only FaceTime only works between Apple devices — iPhone, iPad, and Mac. If your family member has an Android phone, you won't be able to FaceTime them. WhatsApp or Zoom would be better in that situation.

Needs an Apple ID You need an Apple ID to use FaceTime. Most iPhone users already have one but if you've never set one up it can feel like an extra hurdle.

No Android version This is the main limitation. If half your family uses Android phones, FaceTime isn't practical as your only calling app.

Who is FaceTime Best For?

FaceTime is ideal for you if:

  • You have an iPhone or iPad

  • Your family and friends also use Apple devices

  • You want the simplest possible setup

  • You value excellent picture and sound quality

Final Verdict

For iPhone and iPad users FaceTime is unbeatable for simplicity and quality. The only reason it doesn't suit everyone is that it only works on Apple devices. If your whole family uses iPhones — this is all you need.
